    Atomic layer deposition of Ta-based thin films: Reactions of alkylamide precursor with various reactants

    The growth mechanisms and film properties of atomic layer deposition (ALD) Ta-based thin films were investigated from alkylamide precursor [Ta(NMe2)(5), (PDMAT)]. The reactions of PDMAT with various reactants including water, NH3, Oxygen, and hydrogen plasma were studied and the resulting film properties were investigated by various analysis techniques. For TaN ALD from NH3 and H plasma, the films were contaminated by considerable amount of carbon, while the Ta2O5 deposited from water and O plasma were quite pure. Also, nitrogen was incorporated for ALD from PDMAT and H plasma, while no nitrogen incorporation was observed for O-plasma based plasma enhanced-ALD of Ta2O5 except at high deposition temperature over 300 degrees C.     Adsorption-induced conversion of the carbon nanotube field effect transistor from ambipolar to unipolar behavior

    We investigate ambipolar to unipolar transition by the effect of ambient air on the carbon nanotube field-effect transistor. A unipolar transport property of the double-walled nanotube field-effect transistor and its conversion from ambipolar behavior are observed. We suggest that adsorptions of oxygen molecules, whose lowest-unoccupied-molecular-orbital state is around the midgap of the carbon nanotube, could suppress the electron channel formation and, consequently, result in the unipolar transport behavior.open343

    Polymeric biomaterials for the delivery of platinum-based anticancer drugs

    Since cisplatin, cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II), received FDA approval for use in cancer treatment in 1978, platinum-based drugs have been one of the most widely used drugs for the treatment of tumors in testicles, ovaries, head and neck. However, there are concerns associated with the use of platinum-based anticancer drugs, owing to severe side effects and drug resistance. In order to overcome these limitations, various drug-delivery systems have been developed based on diverse organic and inorganic materials. In particular, the versatility of polymeric materials facilitates the tuning of drug-delivery systems to meet their primary goals. This review focuses on the progress made over the last five years in the application of polymeric nanoparticles for the delivery of platinum-based anticancer drugs. The present article not only describes the fundamental principles underlying the implementation of polymeric nanomaterials in platinum-based drug delivery, but also summarizes concepts and strategies employed in the development of drug-delivery systems.open112519Ysciescopu

    Bioreducible Polymer-delivered siRNA Targeting MMP-9: Suppression of Granulation Tissue Formation after Bare Metallic Stent Placement in a Rat Urethral Model

    To evaluate the effectiveness of small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in suppressing granulation tissue formation caused by bare metallic stent placement in a rat urethral model. All experiments were approved by the committee of animal research. In 20 Sprague-Dawley male rats (weight range, 300-350 g), a self-expanding metallic bare stent was inserted in the urethra with fluoroscopic guidance. One group of 10 rats (group A) was treated with MMP-9 siRNA/bioreducible branched polyethylenimine-disulfide cross-linked-indocyanine green (bioreducible BPEI-SS-ICG), while the other group of 10 rats (group B) received control siRNA/bioreducible BPEI-SS-ICG treatment. All rats were sacrificed at 4 weeks. The therapeutic effectiveness of the MMP-9 siRNA/bioreducible BPEI-SS-ICG complex was assessed by comparing the two results of retrograde urethrography, histologic examination, and quantification of MMP-9 by using zymography and Western blot analysis between the two groups. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate differences. Stent placement was successful in all rats without a single case of migration at follow-up. Retrograde urethrography performed 4 weeks after stent placement demonstrated significantly larger luminal diameters of the urethra within the stents in group A compared with those in group B (P = .011). Histologic analysis revealed that the mean percentage of granulation tissue area (P < .001), mean number of epithelial layers (P < .001), and mean thickness of submucosal fibrosis (P < .001) were significantly decreased in group A compared with group B. Meanwhile, the mean density of inflammatory cell infiltration did not significantly differ between the two groups (P = .184). Quantitative analysis disclosed MMP-9 levels to be lower in group A relative to group B, indicating positive inhibition of MMP-9 by MMP-9 siRNA/bioreducible BPEI-SS-ICG.     The clinical usefulness of initial serum procalcitonin as an aggravation predictor in a hepatobiliary tract infection at emergency department

    Background and Objectives: The ability to predict future clinical deterioration early in patients who present to an emergency care center with a hepatobiliary tract infection is difficult. We studied the clinical usefulness of the initial serum levels of procalcitonin in a hepatobiliary tract infection as an indicator for predicting aggravation in the early stages.Methods: Of the patients who presented with the clinical symptoms of a hepatobiliary tract infection, 99 were diagnosed with a hepatobiliary tract infection by imaging studies and subsequently enrolled in the study. Laboratory tests were obtained in the early stage of disease after presentation to an emergency care center. We assessed and compared the serum levels of many early inflammatory markers (white blood cell [WBC] counts, C‑reactive protein and procalcitonin) between patients whose symptoms were initially stable upon arrival to an emergency care center but then deteriorated to, those whose symptoms remained consistently stable. Thus, we examined if the above serum markers are useful in predicting the possibility of future symptom aggravation.Results: Of a total of 99 patients, 27 were assigned to the symptom aggravation group. The serum levels of WBC counts and C‑reactive protein in the aggravation group were elevated. However, the median value (interquartile range) of procalcitonin was relatively increased at 2.28 (0.41–7.84 ng/ml), demonstrating a significant difference.Conclusions: In conclusion, initial serum levels of procalcitonin might be used as an indicator for aggravation in patients with hepatobiliary tract infection at the emergency department, even though there is hemodynamic stability.Key words: Hepatobiliary tract, infection, procalcitoni

    Identifying and mitigating residual vibrations in wave-based control of lumped, flexible systems

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Wave-based control (WBC) is a technique for motion control of under-actuated flexible sys-tems. It envisages actuator motion as launching a motion wave into the system, while simulta-neously absorbing any wave returning from the system. For rest-to-rest motion the net launch displacement is set at half the target displacement. In absorbing the returning wave and vibra-tions, WBC moves the system the remaining distance to the target, with zero steady-state error. The focus of this paper is on very small residual vibrations around the target position which can endure for a long time after arrival at target. This issue was discovered through a recent devel-opment within WBC context on controlling complex two-dimensional, mass-spring, beam-like arrays. To date their existence has been unidentified. This paper investigates and interprets the nature of these vibrations, explains and identifies them based on wave ideas, and finally offers a new wave-based approach to mitigate or suppress them. It also discusses their implication, not just for WBC but for the general problem of control of flexible systems

    Hybrid nanofabrication processes utilizing diblock copolymer nanotemplate prepared by self-assembled monolayer based surface neutralization

    Nanostructures including nanohole and metal dot arrays were fabricated by hybrid processes combing self-assembled diblock copolymer and conventional semiconductor processes. The interfacial energy between polystyrene-b-polymethylmetacrylate (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer and substrate surface was controlled by employing a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), resulting in a polymer template with well-ordered cylindrical nanohole array. The nanohole sizes were controlled within 10 to 22 nm in diameter using block copolymers with different molecular weights. The PS nanotemplates were fabricated on various substrates, including oxides, nitrides, and poly-Si. Nanohole pattern was transferred by dry etching process, producing inorganic nanohole templates.     Graphene oxide incorporated polysulfone substrate for the fabrication of flat-sheet thin-film composite forward osmosis membranes

The preparation and performances of the newly synthesized thin film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes with graphene oxide (GO)-modified support layer are presented in this study. GO nanosheets were incorporated in the polysulfone (PSf) to obtain PSf/GO composite membrane support layer. Polyamide (PA) active layer was subsequently formed on the PSf/GO by interfacial polymerization to obtain the TFC-FO membranes. Results reveal that at an optimal amount of GO addition (0.25wt%), a PSf/GO composite support layer with favorable structural property measured in terms of thickness, porosity and pore size can be achieved. The optimum incorporation of GO in the PSF support layer not only significantly improved water permeability but also allowed effective PA layer formation, in comparison to that of pure PSf support layer which had much lower water permeability. Thus, a TFC-FO membrane with high water flux (19.77Lm-2h-1 against 6.08Lm-2h-1 for pure PSf) and reverse flux selectivity (5.75Lg-1 against 3.36Lg-1 for pure PSf) was obtained under the active layer facing the feed solution or AL-FS membrane orientation. Besides the improved structural properties (reduced structural parameter, S) of the support layer, enhanced support hydrophilicity also contributed to the improved water permeability of the membrane. Beyond a certain point of GO addition (≥0.5wt%), the poor dispersion of GO in dope solution and significant structure change resulted in lower water permeation and weaker mechanical properties in support as well as FO flux/selectivity of consequent TFC membrane. Overall, this study suggests that GO modification of membrane supports could be a promising technique to improve the performances of TFC-FO membranes

    Shape-based peak identification for ChIP-Seq

    We present a new algorithm for the identification of bound regions from ChIP-seq experiments. Our method for identifying statistically significant peaks from read coverage is inspired by the notion of persistence in topological data analysis and provides a non-parametric approach that is robust to noise in experiments. Specifically, our method reduces the peak calling problem to the study of tree-based statistics derived from the data. We demonstrate the accuracy of our method on existing datasets, and we show that it can discover previously missed regions and can more clearly discriminate between multiple binding events.
